VIJAYAWADA: In a bid to regulate passenger rush, around 258 special trains – either transiting or originating from Vijayawada have been arranged so far, ahead of this year’s Sankranti festival. All trains have been operating from January 1 till January 20 to cater to the arriving-departing passengers.
Vijayawada railway division officials have already issued a travel advisory asking people to avoid crowding platforms during the festive season by saying their goodbyes from, and welcoming their relatives at, the concourse or waiting areas. Special train services are being run to cater to all class of rail passengers. There are Jansadharan (only second seating accommodation), AC Special, Suvidha (Special Fare) and Special Trains being run in all directions from Vijayawada.

providing more than seven special trains between Vijayawada and Hyderabad, the waiting list numbers are still spiking as high as 350 in the past two days. Officials admit that they did not anticipate the rush to increase this much compared to the previous years. Railway officials said that most of the passenger rush was coming from Hyderabad to Vijayawada.
The second wave was towards Vizag and Godavari districts, while the third wave are mostly pilgrims heading towards Tirupati. Officials also said that they would be increasing the platform ticket prices to Rs 20 from Rs 10 during the festive days to regulate the crowd. A notification in this regard will be out in the coming days.
Senior officials said that they have deployed special duty staff to manage the platform timings to ensure that there is no inordinate delay compared to the previous years. They also said that this is the first time they are taking this initiative after studying the issues that arose during previous Sankranti seasons.
Passengers can also utilise the ‘UTS on Mobile’ App to book unreserved tickets on their smartphones.
