Southern Railway plans to increase the number of services of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) in the upcoming season, officials from Salem Division said on Wednesday.
As many as seven steel coaches from Integral Coach Factory (ICF) arrived at Mettupalayam Junction on Tuesday, bringing the total number of new coaches to 15, officials told The Hindu.
With eight NMR services already available (six between Udhagamandalam and Coonoor and two between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam), Southern Railway is mulling to add two more services. However, the official announcement is expected by the end

of March as NMR season will commence from April and will end in mid-July, officials noted.
In 2018, Salem Division of Southern Railway placed an order for 28 ICF coaches, out of which 15 coaches have arrived at Mettupalayam Junction. These coaches will be more spacious and will have a larger glass windows than the present coaches in NMR trains to serve the passengers better. The rest of the 13 coaches will arrive after the NMR season by the end of this year, railway officials said.
Southern Railway will also replace old and worn-out wooden coaches in NMR trains with these ICF steel coaches depending on the necessity, according to officials.

Currently, only four coaches are attached to each oil-powered steam locomotive used along the NMR line.
Following complaints from tourists about the limited number of seats available in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) trains, the Heritage Steam Chariot Trust (HSCT) has appealed to the Salem division of Southern Railways to increase the number of coaches to allow more tourists to use the service.
K. Natrajan, founder of the HSCT, said that currently, oil-fired steam locomotives running along the NMR route were only pulling four coaches.
“However,

the locomotives were designed to pull up to six coaches at a time without a problem,” said Mr. Natrajan, adding that the railways needs to seriously reconsider restoring the full complement of coaches to the existing engines being used along the line to better serve tourists.
“Right now, especially during the weekends, around 200 tourists miss out on experiencing the joy of riding the NMR due to lack of availability of seats, while increasing capacity will also allow the railways to make the line more profitable,” said Mr. Natrajan.
The HSCT has also written to the senior section engineer of Southern Railway in charge of the locomotive shed in Coonoor to consider his appeal to increase the number of coaches.
“The NMR has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years, especially with regard to increasing the number of services for tourists, with special services being run from Udhagamandalam and Ketti as well as between Coonoor and Runnymede.
The next step towards increasing revenue for the division will be to increase the passenger capacity in each train,” said Mr. Natrajan.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is currently pushed uphill from Coonoor to Ooty by diesel locomotives.
The Salem Division of the Southern Railway is considering introducing oil-fired steam locomotives along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) line between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam in a limited capacity, to make charter services more appealing to tourists.
Currently, the trains running between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam, are pulled by diesel engines. Railway officials said it became impractical to use coal-fired or oil-fired engines to pull the train up the slopes. “Currently, coal-fired or oil-fired steam engines are used

from the section of the NMR between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, from where the train is hitched onto a diesel locomotive to complete the trip to Udhagamandalam,” an official said.
However, with charter services being introduced, many of the tourists using the service have requested the Railways to use only the coal-fired engines for the duration of the route. “However, due to a variety of reasons, the coal-fired engine cannot be used for the entire journey, but we are considering using the oil-fired locomotives from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam,” confirmed an official.
Recently, a trial run was completed using an oil-fired locomotive using three coaches between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam, confirmed Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, U Subba Rao.
said that a variety of parameters, including the time it takes for the train to reach Udhagamandalam from Coonoor, as well as any technical challenges the locomotive may face were tested.
Though the train took slightly longer than the time it would take for a diesel locomotive to complete the trip, officials said that they were satisfied with the results of the test run, and plan to do more such runs in the coming months to ascertain the feasibility of using the oil-fired locomotive for the trip.
