A total of 218 more stations in Southern Railway will offer free Wi-Fi connectivity to passengers by the first week of September, taking the number of stations with the facility to 500 in the zone.
This is part of a scheme to provide access to the internet at 4,791 stations across the country.
Tata Trusts has been told to expedite the project, which is to be completed under the 100-day programme of the Narendra Modi government (NDA-II) at the Centre.

high-level review meeting at the Railway Board advised Tata Trusts to give a timeline for commissioning the facility before the deadline.
Google is likely to provide the solution for Authorising, Authenticating and Accounting of customers accessing the Wi-Fi, which will initially be of 1 Mbps speed.
Principal Chief Signal and Telecommunications Engineer S.K. Goyal said free Wi-Fi at all stations with train stoppages would be available by September first week.
Of the 500-odd such stations in the Southern Railway, the facility was already available in 282 stations. The respective railway zones would provide space and cable for installing the facility.
Tata Trusts spokesperson said orders had been placed for equipment and the process of installation and commissioning of Wi-Fi at 4,791 stations would be completed by September.
Google solution for the authentication was required as per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India guidelines.
Tata Trusts would provide a grant for implementing the project through vendors and hand over the facility to the Indian Railways, the spokesperson added.

The railway ministry is reported to be working on a plan which will see the phased introduction of private operators of passenger trains. The plan is to allow interested private firms to bid for rights to run passenger trains. This is a good and overdue development. It is about 27 years since private sector participation was invited into railway operations, with schemes such as own your wagon. Since then there have been other attempts to invite private participation in railways. But the record has been patchy, due to resistance from entrenched interests. It must be done right this time.
It is four years since a committee headed by Bibek Debroy submitted a comprehensive report to the government on ways to restructure railways.

The report included recommendations on preliminary steps which need to be taken to allow private operators of passenger trains. However, there has been scant progress since then. With a renewed mandate, the Narendra Modi government must now move swiftly.
It is over two years since the relevant approvals were received to establish a Rail Development Authority, an independent sector regulator to create a positive environment for investments. Such a regulator must be set up quickly because its presence will be essential to attract private investment. Currently, Indian Railways handles both policy issues and operations. In this situation, an independent regulator will be a prerequisite to give confidence to potential private bidders on account of the conflict of interest. Also, passenger pricing is largely subsidised today. A smooth transition to a competitive framework in operation of passenger trains may need regulatory intervention to start with.
The railway ministry is expected to take its unions into confidence while finalising the plan. It is necessary to make sure that misapprehensions do not derail the plan to introduce competition in running passenger trains. Unlike the last occasion, it is important for railway minister Piyush Goyal to use the political capital of the government to overcome vested interests. The Debroy report had suggested a long-term transition to an operating framework which envisaged bifurcating railways into two parts. One, which owned and maintained the infrastructure. The other part is to compete with private players in operations. This stage will have to be preceded by establishment of a credible regulator. Indian Railways remains the country’s lifeline. Any improvement in its operations triggered by competition will benefit everyone.

it may take some more time to restore the train services to Puri. "No train from Puri till May 10 at least", read an ECoR statement issued on Saturday evening.
An ECoR spokesman said maximum damages have occured at Puri station, Khurda Road and Bhubaneswar stations. The station building, coaching depot and other establishment at Puri have been badly damaged. "The most crucial aspect is that the coaching depot at Puri has been practically isolated from the rail network. We are yet to assess the huge damage to the station", he said.
Around 20 trains originates from Puri on a daily basis. Puri is one among three big stations of the railway zone. Another important stations are Bhubaneswar and Khurda Road stations. Maintenance shed for MEMU trains at Khurda Road and platforms at Bhubaneswar station have been damaged in the cyclone.
The entire railway stretch from Bhadrak to Palasa and beyond bore the brunt of cyclone Fani that hit Puri on Friday. Railways has started restoration works soon after the wind speed decreased, ECoR sources said.
The ECoR has decided to start two special trains on trial basis from Bhubaneswar from Saturday evening.
Bhubaneswar-Bengaluru Special will leave at 7 pm. The other Bhubaneswar-Jagdalpur (Junagarh link) will start at 7:35 pm on this evening for Jagdalpur. It will be a great help for passengers waiting to go to these places , said a railway officer.

BENGALURU: Over 400 students' dream of studying medicine suffered a blow on Sunday after an eight-hour train delay prevented them from appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Bengaluru. The students were travelling aboard Hampi Express from north Karnataka.
The train reached the city at 2:36 pm, 8 hours after its scheduled arrival of 6:30 am. By the time the train reached Bengaluru, many students had given up the hope of appearing for NEET. Others rushed to their centres but were not allowed inside. NEET began at 2:30 pm and the reporting time for candidates was 1:30 pm.

devastated students said they were not aware of the routine diversion and had not expected such delays.
South Western Railway said a route diversion, prompted by rail work, caused the train delay, but insisted that passengers were informed about the change in advance through text messages.
The heartbreaking episode prompted calls from students, parents, and politicians for a re-exam. Rail officials said they would write to the HRD ministry requesting a re-test for the affected candidates. Hundreds of aspirants in north Karnataka had picked Bengaluru as their exam centre and boarded the Hampi Express. The train was scheduled to leave Hubballi at 6:20 pm on Saturday but left at 8:21 pm.
