South Central Railway has recorded the highest ever freight loading of 117.16 million tonnes (MTs) surpassing the target as well as the earlier best ever annual performance much before the end of the financial year of 2018-19. The Railway Board had set up a target of 111 MTs. However, a multi-pronged strategy, close coordination between different wings and by identifying traffic trends, the record was achieved, said General Manager Gajanan Mallya on Tuesday.
Previous highest freight loading was in 2014-15 when it had transported 116.80 MTs. The General Manager took stock of the ‘result yielding marketing plan’ of the operating department led by principal chief operations manager N. Madhusudhana Rao and appreciated the entire team.

freight record was possible to a significant extent due to heavy rise in demand for coal from power houses in the region. Sufficient number of rakes were made available for Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) for transport of coal to various destinations of up to 64.14 MTs surpassing the earlier best performance of 62.09 MTs in 2014-15. Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited (KPCL) in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh was another core customer, enabling transport of huge freight loads to and from the port to various destinations. Cement industries too gave good business to the zone with around 27 MTs transported.
Other commodities include fertilizers which generated 5.88 MTs of freight loading, imported iron ore of 5.45 MTs, foodgrains of 4.33 MTs and raw material for steel plants to about 2.75 MTs. The container traffic has been about 1.21 MTs, petroleum oil lubricants of 0.77 MTs, while other goods contributed 5.65 MTs.
All this led to rise in freight earnings of ₹ 10,745 crore, an increase of ₹ 2,414 crore over the previous financial year (2017-18) freight revenue earning of ₹ 8,331 crore, revealed SCR spokesperson Ch. Rakesh. Chief electrical locomotive engineer B. Gopinath Mallya, chief freight transportation manager B. Nagya, chief motive power engineer P. Ravi Kumar and others participated in the meeting.

Mr. Kumar, who sources gold ornaments from Mumbai, supplies them to the jewellers in Mysuru. of dire consequences if he did not hand over the bag with the ornaments. Snatching it, they disembarked and fled from the station.
Taking up the complaint, a team of Railway police personnel constituted by Superintendent of Railway Police Bheemashankar S. Guled got to tracing the accused. Over a period of five months, the team worked on various clues including the CCTV footage taken from the railway station and finally zeroed in on Ramesh Pitnekar in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district on January 30, 2019.
While interrogating Pitnekar, the police learnt about the involvement of four more associates including three of his relatives.
They managed to arrest Maruti and Anant from Malangi and Valwad villages of Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. Two more accused are absconding.
Mr. Guled said the accused are in the age group of 35 to 45. While three accused are brothers, one of them – Ramesh Pitnekar – is their cousin. The police is in the process of tracing the whereabouts of two more accused.

PUNE: The Pune rail division has claimed that all the foot overbridges (FOBs) in its jurisdiction were safe but these structures would be checked again as a precautionary measure against the backdrop of the CST foot overbridge collapse in Mumbai on Thursday.
“The Pune division has a total of 42 foot overbridges and all of them are safe. As far as safety audits are concerned, we do have a system in place under which the bridges are inspected for any kind of weakness throughout the year,” an official told TOI.
The division had

faced a lot of flak due to its alleged negligence in the hoarding frame collapse on October 5 last year.
“Currently, work related to setting up of railings on foot overbridges at Akurdi and Chinchwad stations and flooring works at Kasarwadi Station overbridge is on. Apart from checks at different levels, a ‘super check’ is conducted by senior officials to ensure that the executives have done their job properly. This year too, all the foot overbridges will be checked as per the schedule. We will intensify the checks this year,” the official said.
Sources told TOI that this year the primary focus will be on ensuring that the foot overbridges are not overcrowded.
“Directions have been given to prevent overcrowding on overbridges. At the Pune station, a new overbridge has come up and it will soon be connected with escalators. It has reduced the crowd, which will further decrease once the escalators are in place. We will focus on other stations as well and the railway protection force has been asked to take steps to ensure effective crowd management. New foot overbridges will also be constructed wherever required,” the official said.

MUMBAI: The anger over the Pulwama terror attack was very much palpable on Saturday morning as protesters, reportedly without any political backing, got onto railway tracks at Nalasopara station and disrupted peak-hour train traffic for nearly four hours, leaving thousands of office-goers stranded.
The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters but were met with stone-pelting. An eye-witness said that since 7am, groups of commuters were seen raising slogans condemning the terror attack.
"By 8am, it snowballed into a protest and thousands gathered on the tracks. The railway police tried to pacify

the mob but in vain. By 12 pm, the police resorted to a mild lathicharge. However, the mob retaliated and pelted stones at the cops," said the eye-witness.
At least four policemen sustained minor injuries. The situation was completely out of control as the protesters outnumbered the Railway Police Force and police personnel, said a source. The tracks were cleared only after the lathicharge. “The suburban railway tracks at Nalasopara, Virar and Bhayander were cleared and all train services were restored by 1pm,” said WR public relations officer Gajanan Mahatpurkar.
Protests were witnessed at Virar and Bhayander railway stations too, but were brought under control soon. There was an attempt by another group of 50 people to stage a rail roko at Mankhurd station on Harbour line in the afternoon, but it was averted by RPF and Central Railway officials.
As many as 54 suburban trains were cancelled during the morning peak hour and over 14 long-distance trains were delayed or short-terminated due to the protests. During the hours that train traffic was affected, WR managed to operate some trains between Churchgate and Vasai Road stations, a source said.
WR chief spokesperson Ravinder Bhakar said that jumping on the tracs was completely unwarranted and appealed to citizens to not stop trains as it affects the transport “lifeline” of Mumbai. “This is not the way to protest by putting scores of commuters to inconvenience. Our officials and RPF personnel tried several ways to request the protesters to get off the tracks. A lot of trains arriving in Mumbai from other districts and states were held up and suburban services badly hit,” he stated. Anger
